Benefits of Telehealth (Audio/Video)

  • Increased Access and Convenience: Receive care from your pharmacy while being assisted by a member of the pharmacy staff, who can provide necessary administrative or technical support.
  • Reduced Exposure: Minimizes physical contact with others, reducing the risk of exposure to contagious illnesses.
  • Timely Care: Allows for quicker appointments and follow-up, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Provider-to-Provider Collaboration: Facilitates easier consultations between your local pharmacist/team and other specialists, improving coordination.

Risks & Limitations of Telehealth

  • Diagnostic Limitations: While the pharmacy staff can assist with certain readings (e.g., blood pressure), your remote healthcare provider cannot conduct a physical examination or hands-on assessment which may affect the accuracy of the diagnosis or treatment plan. The provider relies heavily on your verbal description and the video image.
  • Technology Failure: There is a risk of technical issues, such as loss of internet connection, video freezing, or poor audio quality, which could interrupt or prematurely end the visit.
  • Security Risks: While the platform used is HIPAA-compliant, there is a minor residual risk to the privacy of your health information if an unauthorized party gains access to the electronic transmission. We ensure the consultation takes place in a private, secure room within the pharmacy. However, you should still remain mindful of any individuals near the consultation space.
  • Need for In-Person Care: The provider, or the assisting pharmacist, may determine that the information or the patient’s condition requires an immediate in-person evaluation. If this occurs, the telehealth visit will be immediately stopped, and you will be directed to follow-up immediately.

Emergency Procedures

  • Telehealth is Not for Emergencies: The program does not provide 24-hour emergency services.
  • Patient Responsibility: In the event of an emergency (e.g., chest pain, severe shortness of breath, sudden life-threatening symptoms), you must hang up and immediately call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room.
